Stopping the republican health care bill from passing was a huge win, but the war is far from over. Threats to defund both Medicaid and Planned Parenthood made Reproductive health a main target of the proposed legislation.
While attacks from the right have been relentless, the response from the Democratic Party, who has shown they are willing to use time abortion as a bargaining chip, has had devastating repercussions.
Please join NYCFAR for our next meeting at Mayday Space on August 29th at 7PM! The first hour we will have a discussion on why abortion and SRH must be central to a universal healthcare plan, and the second half will be devoted to planning the logistics of tabling and distributing literature at the panel (what we want that to look like).
From 7-8PM we will discuss Lichi D’Amelio’s article in Jacobin where she lays out the current political landscape, documents recent attacks on abortion rights from Democrats and socialists, and makes the argument that abortion must be central to a leftist agenda, not sacrificed for it. In our discussion we will unpack Lichi’s argument, think about how it can be applied to the fight for single payer, counter arguments that we may come up against, and articulate responses.
Please read Lichi’s phenomenal new piece Losing the battle and the war to prepare for discussion: https://www.jacobinmag.com/2017/08/abortion-democrats-bernie-sanders-aclu-roe-mello
The second half of the meeting will be devoted to planning the logistics of tabling and distributing literature at the panel (including what materials we would like to prepare- zines, pamphlets, flyers) to represent NYCFAR, etc. If there is time we could start crafting or at least make a plan if some folks want to take that on outside of the meeting. Please bring any creative ideas you may have (and art supplies, too!)
See you all on the 29th!
